Ministry's Mission:

 

We cherish education for all our people equally and aim to provide a life-long education of quality for all children, youth and adults of South Sudan; an education that is relevant and affordable based on the needs and aspirations of the people, to enable them to become responsible and productive citizens.

 

Functions:

 

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology performs the following functions and duties:

 

  1. Inspection and supervision of general education at all levels to ensure proper performance;
  2. Coordinate and administer schools feeding programmes;
  3. Registration of education and training institutions;
  4. Manage South Sudan schools and university examinations and other educational certification;
  5. Provide and manage technical training and teacher training institutes;
  6. Rehabilitation of schools and other educational institutes alone or in coordination with foreign donors, UN agencies and NGOs;
  7. Preparation and development of curricula for primary and secondary schools;
  8. Coordination of RSS and State government education policies and strategies;
  9. Formulate an adult literacy policy;
  10. Expand basic education through recruitment of teachers, curriculum development, increase the number of schools, accelerate learning and literacy programmes;
  11. Improve enrolments, equity and quality of delivery throughout the educational sector;
  12. Improve gender equity through the implementation of activities that increase the enrolment and retention of females;
  13. Enhance education governance and management at State and County levels;
  14. Strengthen educational infrastructure;
  15. Establish and develop institutes of higher education that will produce manpower with relevant skills;
  16. Determine the requirements for, and provide facilities and curriculum for the promotion of special needs education;
  17. Supervise the training, development and management of teachers at all education levels;
  18. Support the South Sudan Examination Council;
  19. Supervision of the student athletic and cultural activities; and
  20. Advise and support States and local governments in their responsibilities for education and build their capacity to assume all functions vested by the Constitution and RSS policy. 

 

Structure:

 

The ministry is headed by H.E. the minister supported by two undersecretaries; one for General Education and the other for Higher & Tertiary Education. The General Education division is composed of the following directorates under Director Generals:

 

  1. Directorate of Administration and Finance
  2. Directorate of Planning and Budgeting
  3. Directorate of General Education
  4. Directorate of Gender and Social Change
  5. Directorate of Innovation and Quality Promotion
  6. Secretariat of Examination

 

The Higher & Tertiary Education has the following one directorate also headed by a Director General:

 

  1. Directorate of Higher and Tertiary Education

  1. Basic education for all in South Sudan
  2. Provide tertiary and higher education in South Sudan
  3. Teacher training
