Disclosure of Social Assessment report for the upgrading of Juba-Nadapal road

JUBA, 25 November 2013 - The Government of South Sudan, Ministry of Transport, Roads and Bridges (MTRB) through the support from various development partners intend to upgrade the Juba to Nadapal road section to bitumen standard so as to enhance regional connectivity and integration as well as trade with its neighbouring countries.


In order to ensure that the up-grading of Nadapal -Juba Road is socially accepted and sustainable by recognizing social consequences and identifying ways to prevent, avoid, minimize or mitigate adverse effects as well as enhance the positive impacts, MTRB prepared a Social Assessment(SA) report.

 

The SA report determines the characteristics of the existing social and bio-physical environments that may be impacted and the basis for the Social Management Plan (SMP), designed to prevent or mitigate potential negative impacts that may be caused by the project and enhance the positive one.


The MTRB is now disclosing the SA report for public consumption.

287 veterans graduate with life skills

JUBA, 24 September 2013 – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as the UN agency providing technical support and skills development to the South Sudan Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program on September 18, graduated 287 veterans/ X-combatants as it marked the successful closure of the DDR pilot program launched in mid April 2013.


The former combatants underwent at least 90 days of training, providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to help them reintegrate into their communities as civilians and productive citizens.

When the second war broke out in Bor town in Jonglei State on the 16th May 1983, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army /Movement (SPLA/ M) was immediately formed by the southern Sudanese who were disappointed by the bad governance by the Khartoum-based government. The majority of the former Sudanese army, intellectuals, students and peasants joined the rank and file of the SPLM/A. Among these were young boys who joined the movement voluntarily or were mobilized by the SPLM/A for one reason or the other.
